Democrats In Search Of A Biden Alternative

Panicked Dems Start Looking for Alternatives to Biden

Democrats in Search of a Biden Alternative

Three strategists close to three potential Democratic candidates tell Jonathan Martin of The New York Times that Joe Biden has become so politically weak that strategists in both parties now believe an alternative nominee would have a better chance of beating the Republican nominee.

Even among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents 67 percent asserted the party should choose someone else as its standard-bearer.

Potential Biden Alternatives

Democrats in search of a Biden alternative have floated plenty of party leaders many of whom are widely seen as potential contenders for the presidency.

They include Vice President Kamala Harris, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Stacey Abrams, the former Georgia gubernatorial candidate who has been outspoken in her criticism of Biden.

Biden's Age and Political Struggles

CNN's Chris Cillizza points out that President Joe Biden's age—he'll be 82 shortly after the 2024 election—and his ongoing political struggles are a major concern for Democrats.

Biden's approval ratings have been consistently low and he has faced criticism from both Democrats and Republicans for his handling of the economy, the war in Ukraine, and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Conclusion

The growing sense among Democrats that Biden is a weak candidate is a serious problem for the party. If Democrats are unable to find a viable alternative to Biden, they could face a difficult choice in 2024: Nominate a weak candidate who is likely to lose, or choose a stronger candidate who may not be able to unite the party.

Either way, the Democratic Party is facing a major challenge in the 2024 election.
